My Television Is A Radio

Here I am in a room and I can hear the t.v. on

My wife loves all her programs and can watch them all night

Down the hall in the office I sit and write

The sound of the t.v. is from the living room

Each program she watches is funny and interesting

When something funny happens I use to get up and walk over to take a look

Then I would rush back and then begin to type

Sometimes I would easily get hooked and lay on the couch and grab a snack as I watched

One sitcom turns into another

It is not easy to go back to the computer and think for myself again

Two hours have past and all I have done is blink

So I ask my wife to turn down the sound so I can hear it but I don't know what anyone is saying

The laugh sound track I hear I pretend it is for something I just wrote

My own captive audience that laughs at my jokes

Even though I could put the radio on and listen to music

I would never have to except the challange

Life is full of temptaions and t.v. is a big one

My love for t.v. is powerful

Because I work nights I miss all the programs that everyone watches

If I d.v.r. all the programs then I will have hours to watch

I choose not too

My desire to write is stronger and now I am making the time

Each day giving up something in order to reach my goals

If I don't put the time and effort in I will never improve

These are the long nights that pay off for being dedicated to practice a skill

Each day I make it a habit

That will make me better and no matter how long it takes

I have built up my self esteem to say I can watch t.v. or write

I can't do both

Make a choice and stand by it

Years of t.v. I enjoyed so much

What have they given me in return ?

Fun and friendship and hours of enjoyment

Now I am looking for more

A future that the t.v. can't give me

I want to expand my mind and my thoughts

We all have to work and need time for sleep and time to do our daily chores

Our free time is special and has to be treated as such

It is a luxury we take for granted and too often squandered

One day all this practice will pay off

Like a young boy who practices his spelling words night after night

Then when Friday comes there is the big test

He is all excited he has passed

Not a hundred but and eighty is very good

He not only learned new words but learned to practice to make his life better

He could of easily watched t.v. instead and nobody would of noticed

Probably passed the test by the skin of his teeth or with a seventy or better

Would he have cheated himself out of a learning experience

That one day might come back to haunt him

Years later when people use words that he never really learned in school because he was watching t.v. instead

Words everyone else knows but him

So going forward think clearly about the simple choices

Take time and see what fits best in your life

Only you can decide what to do and we have to pick and choose

What we learn and what we have to give up for another day
